Serverless computing has emerged as a transformative paradigm in cloud infrastructure, fundamentally altering how developers build, deploy, and scale applications. This technical review examines recent advances in serverless middleware technologies, with particular emphasis on how Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) offerings from major cloud providers are reshaping DevOps practices. The serverless model represents a substantial evolution from traditional infrastructure approaches through key characteristics including infrastructure abstraction, event-driven execution, automatic scaling, and consumption-based billing. The historical progression from physical servers through virtualization and containerization has culminated in the current serverless paradigm, which adheres to core architectural principles of statelessness, event-driven design, and lifecycle isolation. Leading FaaS platforms continue to evolve through technical advancements addressing cold start challenges, integration capabilities, and performance optimizations. For DevOps teams, this evolution necessitates adapting deployment models, testing strategies, scaling approaches, cost optimization techniques, and observability practices. Looking forward, emerging trends include WebAssembly integration, serverless containers, edge computing capabilities, stateful serverless innovations, and advanced function orchestration. Despite significant progress, technical constraints and organizational barriers remain challenges for adoption. By understanding the current trajectory of serverless technologies, organizations can position themselves to leverage this evolution for enhanced agility, reliability, and cost efficiency.
