Enhancing Our Understanding of Engaging Persona Theory
Katie Power · 2025
This chapter explores the potential of engaging Persona Theory in the design of university learning spaces, advocating for a user-centred, inclusive, empathetic approach to space planning. The value of Persona Theory as a methodology is emphasised in designing spaces that not only promote academic achievement but also enhance the well-being of their users. By leveraging the empathetic and inclusive principles of Persona Theory, the research demonstrates how physical learning environments can be designed to support both the functional and emotional needs of diverse stakeholders. This dual focus on performance and well-being positions Persona Theory as a transformative approach to the design of learning spaces. Persona Theory is a powerful tool for understanding students’ and faculty’s diverse needs by creating composite, fictitious characters – personas – that represent various users within the university environment. This methodology helps researchers and designers build empathy by gaining insights into the unique preferences, behaviours and challenges different groups have in academia. By embedding diversity and inclusion into the design process, Persona Theory ensures that spaces are not only functional and efficient but also enjoyable to foster a sense of belonging and well-being.
