Cospeak: An AI-Powered Collaborative Dialogue System for Second Language Acquisition

In the field of second language acquisition, collaborative dialogue is recognized as an effective learning strategy and is vital for foreign language learners. However, learners frequently lack opportunities to engage in dialogue practice with qualified native speakers. To address this challenge, we developed Cospeak, a collaborative dialogue system designed to assist second language learners. We detail the development process of this system and illustrate how large language models can simulate collaborative dialogue scenarios through fine-tuning, providing effective scaffolding for learners. Our user study, which involved ten learners, demonstrates that this collaborative dialogue system significantly enhances self-efficacy among learners. This study provides an effective solution for second language learners to practice collaborative dialogue without requiring significant investment.
