Edge-Mi: Edge-based Microservices for Mobility-aware Task Migration Scheme

Mehbub Alam, Rakesh Matam, Ferdous Ahmed Barbhuiya · 2024

With the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, there’s an escalating demand for efficient data processing solutions near the data source. This has led to a growing reliance on edge computing, which places computation at the network edge device, thus reducing latency and network congestion. However, the dynamic nature of IoT devices, especially those that are mobile in nature, poses certain challenges in data processing, task offloading and task migration. This paper introduces Edge-Mi, a microservice-based task migration framework tailored for mobility-aware edge computing to enhance task execution in a mobile environment. Unlike traditional Virtual Machine (VM)-based and container-based approaches, the microservice-based approach offers a more granular and efficient migration mechanism with advantages in terms of scalability, flexibility and speed, enabling adaptive task distribution based on device mobility. We present the Edge-Mi framework, emphasizing its advantages in reducing latency, network usage, and energy consumption in an edge network. The proposed framework, when compared to the state-of-the-art, underscores its enhanced capabilities, making a compelling case for the next generation of mobility-aware edge computing applications.
