Amelia Tseng, Charles B. Chang, Tania Leal, Jin Sook Lee, Belem G. López · 2025

This chapter provides an overview of research methods for examining heritage speakers&s; productive knowledge of the sound system. Drawing upon selected studies, the chapter reviews several methods for probing heritage language production, discussing their underlying logic, advantages, and limitations. These methods concern both the collection and the analysis of speech samples, including scripted, semi-spontaneous, and spontaneous speech. The chapter concludes with guiding principles and practical considerations for selecting, implementing, and integrating methods within a study design and for interpreting the resulting data; it also makes recommendations for remote implementation and suggestions for future research on heritage language production using these methods.
