Faults of phase current sensors in permanent magnet synchronous machine drives can lead to heavy degradation of the performance and hazardous conditions. Offset or gain errors of the phase current sensors increase torque oscillations and power losses aggravating the risk for incurring permanent damages. In the literature, many papers propose techniques for the diagnosis and compensation of these fault conditions. This paper presents a review of the techniques and algorithms proposed in the literature for the diagnosis and compensation of the current sensor fault. Starting from a description of the effects of current sensor failure modes on the drive performances, the different techniques based on model, data-driven and machine learning, rule-based and empirical are compared and analyzed.
