In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has advanced rapidly, creating a solid foundation for the emergence of smart homes. These innovative homes offer many benefits, including convenience and comfort, but they also come with significant security risks that could endanger people's lives and property. To address these concerns, extensive research has been carried out on the vulnerabilities of IoT-enabled smart homes. However, current solutions for device authentication in smart homes often rely on centralized authentication servers, which can become single points of failure and are prone to various cyber-attacks. As technology continues to evolve, the trend is shifting towards autonomous device authentication, which makes device-to-device (D2D) authentication a critical component of smart home infrastructures. To this end, a middleware broker system has been proposed to support D2D authentication in smart homes. This system allows two intelligent devices to authenticate through a home gateway, providing an additional layer of security. The study shows that the middleware broker system significantly enhances energy efficiency in authentication processes, with potential energy savings of up to 80.60%.
