Documents are crucial for establishing an individual’s identity. In Bangladesh, obtaining essential documents such as birth certificates, National Identity (NID) cards, and educational certificates is often cumbersome due to systemic inefficiencies and security vulnerabilities. These issues can hinder access to vital services and increase identity theft and fraud risks. This study proposes an innovative Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) framework using Hyperledger Indy to address these challenges in Bangladesh’s document management system. By empowering citizens with Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials (VCs), the system enables secure and efficient management of key documents, such as NIDs and birth certificates, tailored specifically to Bangladesh’s national identity infrastructure. Selective disclosure further enhances privacy by allowing citizens to control which information is shared. Utilizing Hyperledger Indy’s decentralized architecture ensures data security and tamper-proof issuance, while integration with government agencies aims to streamline document issuance and verification, improving accessibility and efficiency. This study explores the potential of SSI with Hyperledger Indy to transform document management in Bangladesh, fostering a secure, privacy-preserving, and user-centric ecosystem.
