Prevention Techniques for DDoS Attacks in Cloud Computing

Cloud computing refers to the on-demand computing infrastructure that can be used by customers for services and applications. Utilizing cloud computing for large-scale infrastructure deployments is common to provide secure service. Securing such large-scale infrastructure deployments is vital. One of the security concerns that should be kept in mind is Distributed Denial of Service Attacks (DDoS). DDoS attacks are common and can have an adverse effect on such large-scale cloud-based infrastructures. This paper surveys three mitigation techniques of DDOS attacks in cloud computing environments. The paper starts with an introduction to the world of cloud computing, followed by the security threat of Distributed Denial of Service attacks; describing what they are and how they affect cloud computing. We then describe how these attacks behave in the cloud computing environments, discussing why it is hard to mitigate such attacks in the cloud. We then survey the three mitigation techniques for preventing these attacks in cloud computing; starting with an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for cloud networks [1]; followed by Software Defined Networking-enabled Clouds and how they defend against Distributed Denial of Service attacks [2] and the last technique of Cloud Trace Back Model [3].
