Some new directions in AI

Ian H. White · ITNOW · 1992

Abstract AI has a long and chequered history, a sporadic range of successes, but very little in terms of fundamental new truths. The core theme of AI has for many years been very firmly ensnared by the computing paradigm of program, memory and logical rules. If we are trying to mechanise intellectual processes, what alternatives are there anyway? Concern at the lack of progress, a strong intuition that animate intelligence just doesn’t work even vaguely the same way, and various philosophical objections have led to a growing attention being given to alternatives to the von Neumann legacy.
