Changing outlooks - a personal view

Abstract When the British Computer Society was founded in 1957 its main aims were to further the development and use of computational machinery and related techniques, to facilitate the exchange of information and views, and to inform public opinion. It was, therefore, very aptly described by its name; it was essentially British, its concern was computing, and it was a coterie of like-minded enthusiasts. For many, the Society still conjures up that image.
