Abstract The user of any computer system needs assurance of the performance and reliability of the system. This concern ranges from the ‘non-stop’ behaviour of word-processing packages in use in every office, to the protection of the nation’s foreign currency accounts and military secrets. Other papers in this issue of the Bulletin deal with legal and regulatory aspects of this regime, but it is important not to forget the scientific basis of ‘mission critical’ computing.
