Using TMS to Map Language Hemispheric Dominance: A Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature

Adam Miller, Rana Khalilelahi, Brian Miller · Transcranial magnetic stimulation . · 2025

Background: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is used to treat a number of psychiatric disorders. TMS has also displayed potential to become an important tool for mapping hemispheric language dominance, providing a non-invasive, convenient, and inexpensive alternative to traditional methods such as the Wada Test. Hand dominance is loosely related to hemispheric language dominance, but is not a definitive predictor. In addition to aiding neurosurgical approaches, determining hemispheric language dominance could help guide electrode placement during ECT.
