Zero-Trust Framework-based Intrusion Detection and Prevention Mechanism for IoT Environment
N.Sai Vignesh Babu, S. Basil Xavier · 2025
The Internet of Things (IoT) introduces a hyper-connected ecosystem with a diverse range of devices, from wearables to industrial systems. Despite its potential, IoT environments remain vulnerable to sophisticated cyber threats. This study proposes a Zero Trust-based Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) tailored for IoT environments to address these vulnerabilities. The framework integrates Zero Trust principles with advanced detection techniques to mitigate unauthorized access and malicious activities. Unlike traditional systems, the proposed framework emphasizes contextual trust, continuous monitoring, and micro-segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate the framework's efficacy in improving malicious detection mechanism by validating the requests from host to host in a virtual environment. This research highlights open-source's ability and resource efficiency, making it suitable for IoT devices regardless of the OEMs by manually configuring the policies and validations against the external functionality available for the respective device.
