MEMS microphones have emerged as a potential option for smart hearing aids and audio devices, overcoming traditional microphone drawbacks such as bulkiness, power inefficiency, and poor noise performance. While MEMS microphones provide great sensitivity, noise canceling, and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), conventional systems suffer from distortion and fast battery drain. Adaptive filtering, beamforming, and power management are among the advanced approaches that improve sound clarity and directionality. Recent developments in MEMS microphones are compiled in the article together with its integration with artificial intelligence, energy-efficient signal processing, and better packaging methods. The results highlight their possible exceptional audio performance for low-power, portable devices. Significant gains in 50 dB SNR, 85% noise suppression, and lowered power consumption—70 mW in low activity, 110 mW in high activity—are shown by experimental data. These findings validate that MEMS microphones improve battery life and audio quality; hence these are perfect for portable audio devices and next generation hearing aids.
