Philosophies of Artificial Intelligence

Clifford B. Anderson · 2025

This chapter examines philosophical debates about general (or “strong”) AI, spurred by the Turing Test and Chinese Room thought experiments. We address misconceptions about machine intelligence, sentience, and personhood, and their impact on how we perceive and treat AI. Issues like the desirability of authenticity in an AI are also explored, all aimed at fostering deeper and broader AI literacy.
