Information security threats in IoT smart environments

Sainag Nethala, Sandeep Kampa, Srinivas Reddy Kosna · 2025

The rapid development of the Internet of Things technology has revolutionized many fields, from smart houses to public infrastructure, through healthcare and industrial automation. On the other hand, this proliferation of IoT devices has brought about critical security challenges, as most do not have strong security mechanisms. Therefore, they are easily accessible to all sorts of cyberattacks. This chapter analyzes the threat to information security in IoT smart environments by identifying significant vulnerabilities and categorizing common types of attacks. This chapter underlines, through an extensive review of current literature, several primary categories of IoT security threats: device-related threats, such as like malware and unauthorized access; network-related threats, such as Denial-of-Service attacks and packet sniffing; data privacy threats, unauthorized data collection and profiling; and application-layer threats, exploiting weaknesses in software interfacing with IoT devices. This chapter also provides an extensive and detailed examination of the impact of security breaches in IoT, considering both the direct financial cost and the more significant social implications for privacy and erosion of public confidence. The chapter provides recent data from case studies and empirical studies to better illustrate the IoT threat landscape. Graphs and tables depict the distribution of security threats in different IoT environments, while comparative tables outline device vulnerabilities and countermeasure recommendations. These findings have indicated a growing urge for better security practices, including updating firmware, use of encryption, segmentation of a network, and education of users. It further identifies challenges in implementing these measures by discussing device heterogeneity and resource limitations. The chapter also presents future research directions, including AI-enhanced threat detection and blockchain-based IoT security frameworks. This chapter will hopefully catalyze the quest to build a resilient and secure IoT ecosystem by systematically categorizing IoT security threats and proposing best practices.
