User Interface Design in Mixed Reality Fashion Shopping

Marina Ricci, Alessandra Scarcelli, Annalisa Di Roma · 2025

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology integration in retail, especially in fashion shopping experiences, is growing at a fast pace. The user acceptance of experiences exploiting VR and AR is strongly influenced by the way the user interfaces (UIs) are designed. Despite the growing interest in mixed reality (MR), there is a clear lack of comprehensive rules and features for MR UI design in the scientific literature. This paper aims to fill this gap by conducting a thorough analysis of the research conducted over the last seven years. Our study aims to answer the following research questions: (1) How are UIs designed for MR shopping experiences in the fashion industry? (2) What are the main characteristics of MR UIs? We began with an initial pool of 96 publications from the Scopus database, ultimately selecting and analysing ten studies. Based on this analysis, we propose novel findings for MR UI design and review existing design practices in the field. Our findings highlight key elements of UI design, including a user-centred approach, technological features, and integration with retail systems. Additionally, we identify essential components such as narrative and call-to-action that contribute to more engaging and effective user experiences.
