Citizen Science and Crowdsourcing in Archaeology and Digital Heritage

Anna Maria Marras · 2025

Digital technologies offer a wide range of possibilities for promoting public participation through interactive tools, collaborative platforms, and innovative approaches such as crowdsourcing. Access to digitised collections, the creation of virtual communities and active user participation in the creation and enrichment of cultural content are just some of the opportunities emerging from this constantly evolving scenario. The combination of technology and citizen science has also fostered the development of crowdsourcing projects in humanities disciplines such as archaeology. In archaeology, crowdsourcing projects continue to grow in number and are focused more on aspects of co-creating new content than on tagging, transcription, and metadata. In this chapter, we provide an overview of some of these projects, identify comparative elements and explore the developments expected from generative AI.
