Fundamentals of artificial intelligence
Bożena Skotnicka–Zasadzień, Radosław Wolniak · 2025
The very basics of artificial intelligence (AI) – a definition, major types, and application in different fields – have been explained in minute detail. Discussion starts with a definition that AI is basically the branch of computer science which makes systems capable of doing some tasks, in particular, related to human intelligence: problem-solving and making decisions. This chapter categorizes different types of AI: narrow AI, which is tailored to specific tasks; general AI, which is theoretical and can perform any intellectual task; and superintelligent AI, beyond human intelligence and raising very speculative ethical issues. Core AI techniques discussed include natural language processing, machine vision, and machine learning. These are looked upon in the perspective of how they allow AI systems to learn from data and improve autonomously. The chapter identifies, first of all, the difficulties and disadvantages of AI, particularly in the area of using AI in public work.
