In this chapter, we are going to discuss the security attacks in cyber-physical systems (CPSs), especially on the internet of things (IoT) systems, and provide insights on the application of various machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict attacks before they occur. The number of IoT devices has resulted in an unprecedented amount of connectedness and convenience. On the other hand, it has also brought about new security issues but this time mainly on distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. This chapter presents a comprehensive study on the detection of DDoS attacks targeting IoT devices using ML techniques. We will examine how effective various ML algorithms are in detecting and mitigating such attacks. This chapter will also highlight experimental results by means of performance metrics thereby showing that ML algorithms can indeed be used to improve IoT security.
