R and Shiny in HTA
Rose Hart, Darren Burns, Mark Strong, Andrea Berardi, Dawn Lee · 2025
This chapter advocates for using the R package shiny to build interactive web applications for health technology assessment (HTA) models. It explains how shiny improves accessibility by creating user-friendly interfaces for complex R code, benefiting both modellers and non-programmers. The text details building practical shiny applications, including considerations for structure, coding, transparency, quality control, deployment, and version control using Git. Several examples of existing shiny applications in health economics are showcased, highlighting their benefits and illustrating best practices. Finally, the chapter addresses HTA body acceptance of shiny and discusses its potential for future use in the field.
