Problems, possibilities and potential

Abstract Recently there has been much media interest surrounding the field of virtual reality (VR) with representations in the popular and broadsheet press, television, film and literature reporting its potential in diverse areas from medicine to finance; from education to entertainment. This has raised public awareness of the field, but has also tended to increase expectations. In many cases these expectations cannot be matched by the capabilities of present systems. This article will counter this by providing a balanced overview of the current state of VR, and discussing some of the challenges it faces.
