Flash Separator
Khalid W Hameed · 2025
A flash separator, also known as a flash drum or flash vessel, is a type of process equipment used in the oil and gas, chemical, and petrochemical industries to separate a pressurized stream into its vapor and liquid components. The separator separates the vessel's contents into their individual liquid and vapor phases in steady-state operation. The pressure drop of the separator affects the vaporized fraction of the inlet feed and then the composition of vapor and liquid. Evaporation is the process of vaporizing a portion of solvent (mostly water) to produce a concentrated solution of thick liquor commonly used to concentrate sugar, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, glycerol, glue, and milk, occasionally used to produce pure water. The chapter simulates the evaporator as a combination of heat exchanger and separator to concentrate the sucrose from 10% to 50% by wt.
