Chaotic map has been widely used in cryptography because of its dynamic characteristics, and improving the characteristics of chaotic map is essential for improving the chaotic-map based image encryption algorithm. In this paper, we propose a novel 3-D chaotic map with larger key space and Lyapunov exponent value by improving the characteristics of the logistic map. Simulation experiments have shown that the proposed chaotic map exhibits better chaotic characteristics, including complexity and ergodicity. We also proposed a novel image encryption algorithm based on the proposed chaotic map. Image encryption is composed of shuffling and substitution. Here, we have proposed a novel diagonal shuffling method, which modifies the image into a parallelogram shape and shuffles the pixels in a diagonal direction. The results of various simulation experiments showed that proposed image encryption algorithm provides a high level of security and can be compared to the previous chaotic map-based image encryption algorithms.
