This study investigates the economic and technical impacts of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing within utility sectors, focusing on utility revenue dynamics and energy distribution outcomes in the context of renewable energy sources (RES) such as solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind. It aligns with India's ambitious renewable energy targets and global net-zero emissions objectives, emphasizing the importance of expanding rooftop solar installations. Three scenarios are analyzed: Case 1 establishes baseline utility losses and revenue with a network comprising 350 consumers and 50 prosumers under a three-phase unbalanced distribution network. Case 2 demonstrates a 14.1% reduction in network losses and a 24.5% revenue decrease due to customer-sited generation under net metering, while Case 3 reveals nuanced revenue dynamics with a 36.9% decrease compared to Case 1 and a 19.4% decrease compared to Case 2 when integrating PV with P2P sharing. Real-world data and OpenDSS simulations model various scenarios to quantify the financial implications of P2P trading within utility networks. This research enhances understanding of decentralized energy systems' impacts on utility revenue models, providing valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders on the economic viability and technical challenges of integrating renewable energy and P2P trading into utility networks.
