Three Drivers of Change
Richard E. Susskind · 2023
Abstract This chapter outlines how the legal market transforms under the influence of the more-for-less challenge, liberalisation, and advancing technology. It demonstrates how clients, ranging from in-house legal teams to small businesses and individual citizens, demand increased efficiency and lower costs while managing ever-growing workloads. The chapter explains how liberalisation opens the market by enabling alternative business structures and inviting non-lawyers to participate, thereby intensifying competition. It describes how rapid technological progress, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, reshapes legal practice and the administration of justice. Finally, the chapter emphasises that these converging forces drive radical transformation in the legal industry, compelling it to innovate and revolutionise its service delivery.
