IMPACT OF CYBER THREATS ON THE MANAGEMENT OF STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC RECORDS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

The study investigated the Impact of Cyber Threats on Management of Students’ Academic Records in Public Secondary Schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study was set to: assess the impact of cyber threats on the management of students’ academic records in public secondary schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria. This objective was framed into a research question and a hypothesis respectively. Survey research design was used in the study. The target population of the study is made up of 360 participants in Sabon-Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State. In all, there are 5 ministry of education officials, 14 principals, 341 teachers in Sabon-Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State. A sample size of 3 ministry of education officials, 7 principals and 186 teachers were sampled from Sabon-Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State, making the total of 196 respondents, used in the study. The instrument titled “Questionnaire on Cyber Threats and Educational Records in Public Secondary Schools (QUCYTERPUBS)” was used for data collection in the study. The validated instrument was pilot tested, the reliability co-efficient was determined using Cronbach Alpha statistic and a reliability coefficient of 0.86 was obtained. The data collected in the study was computerized into database using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts, mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research question, while Kruskal-Wallis was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that cyber threats negatively impacted on management of students’ academic records in public secondary schools in Kaduna State. The study recommended among others that, school management should implement strong authentication mechanisms, such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), to prevent unauthorised access to their students’ academic records.
