Atmosphere and the sonic experience of urban space

Nicola Di Croce · 2025

The chapter further explores the role of Tactical Urbanism (TU) in shaping urban atmospheres, emphasizing atmospheric, sensory, and sound-based interventions as tools to balance attractiveness, livability, and inclusiveness in neoliberal cities. It highlights how contemporary urban planning often employs sensory strategies, such as concerts and street music, to create appealing atmospheres for tourists, but neglects inclusiveness and social equity. The chapter advocates for expanding TU’s focus beyond visual interventions to embrace sensory approaches, particularly sound and atmosphere, as a means of fostering urban vibrancy and inclusiveness. Drawing from Sound Studies and atmosphere literature, the chapter critically examines the commodification of public spaces through permanent sonic features and entertainment-focused designs. It argues for participatory and temporary sound-based TU interventions to counteract neoliberal urban trends. Sound is explored in its capacity to function as a relational and affective agent, enhancing urban experiences and promoting inclusivity. Ultimately, the chapter proposes integrating artistic and participatory processes into TU practices to reimagine urban soundscapes and foster interdisciplinary collaborations between urban design and the arts.
