Application of Ontology for Civil Aviation Route Planning Based on Navigation Points
Victor V. Arutin, Igor I. Lychkov · 2025
The perpetual augmentation in air engenders an escalating burden on the air transport management system. In order to address this issue, it is imperative to automate the process of air transport flight planning. In this regard, the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) consortium gives preference to expert decision support systems in which information is presented in the form of ontologies. However, there is a paucity of works that provide ontologies with rules for performing logical inference in decision support systems for air transport flight planning. All these works use a simplified representation of the aircraft route as a separate airspace with homogeneous weather conditions. The objective of this research is to develop an ontology that formalizes expert knowledge in the field of air transport management. This ontology enables the representation of an aircraft's route as a sequence of navigation points characterised by distinct weather conditions, thereby facilitating the automation of air transport flight planning through logical inference.
