The Performance Study on CoAP Protocol over an OpenThread Network

Parida Seehamat, Chatchai Khunboa · 2025

Smart homes, smart logistics, healthcare, smart agriculture, and other industries have extensively utilized the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years. Their ability to communicate data across devices through the Internet has significantly facilitated their increasing popularity. The utilization of IoT devices is anticipated to expand in the future owing to advancements in associated technologies and the increasing demand for more intelligent and efficient systems. The need for IoT technology has led to the introduction of protocols like CoAP, 6LowPAN, and Thread to accommodate the increasing proliferation of IoT devices. However, the increasing number of IoT devices makes network congestion a critical concern. Therefore, in our study, we concentrate on addressing traffic congestion in a real-world setting, utilizing the popular nRF52840 modules. The study shows that nodes transmit data at a rate exceeding 150 packets per second, resulting in over 50% packet loss, an increase in round trip time (RTT), and an increase in retransmission packets as the number of nodes increases.
