This chapter addresses the core concepts of security and technology, along with their impacts on societies. Security refers to the measures and practices put in place to protect individuals, objects, or systems from harmful effects. It consists of elements such as physical, human, and procedural security, as well as technical, informational, communication, and management components. If any of these elements are missing, security can be negatively affected. Globalization blurs the line between internal and external security, forcing states to reshape their security policies. This process increases the complexity of relationships between the national and international dimensions of security. Technology relates to the practical application of scientific knowledge. It aims to facilitate human life and solve problems. Law enforcement agencies actively use technological advancements, applying technological systems to increase efficiency in crime prevention and response. Research and development (R&D) refers to scientific and technical studies conducted to develop new technologies and products. R&D promotes innovation and supports the development of new products and processes. The development and use of technology bring forth various ethical considerations, especially regarding artificial intelligence (AI), data privacy, confidentiality, equality, and justice. Ethical considerations aim to ensure that the development and use of technology align with societal values.
