The Unreal Game Engine as a Virtual Studio Backlot
Mark Sawicki, Juniko Moody · 2025
This chapter explores the new era of virtual production by focusing on how the Unreal Game Engine allows us to fuse live-action footage with CG effects in real time. Unreal Engine supplies producers with access to a robust content library that includes free resources from the Unreal Marketplace (now https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://fab.com ">fab.com ) and high-end resources for photorealistic material, such as Quixel Megascans. This chapter emphasizes the value of pre-constructed CG set designs that cut production costs when compared to building a set. It focuses on the speed of game engines to render worlds in real time without sacrificing quality. Also covered are major aspects of virtual production with Unreal Engine, including the content editor, world designer, and real-time compositor capabilities of Unreal Engine. Collaboration across dispersed teams is stressed by the use of assets from many sources and robust data platforms like Perforce’s Helix Core to support the efficient workflow of distributed teams. Character animation platforms, such as Mixamo, allow synthetic characters to be seamlessly integrated with live performances. The chapter ends with a beginner tutorial providing the basic steps to start working with Unreal Engine, where virtual camera parameters are mapped to real-world equipment to allow for production planning. The abbreviated tutorial is an example for educators and a jumping-off point for students new to using UE for virtual production.
