Metaverse security architecture

Akhil Mittal, Mariya Ouaissa, Mariyam Ouaissa · 2025

As the metaverse continues to evolve, it presents unprecedented opportunities and challenges, particularly in terms of security. This chapter explores the architecture necessary to safeguard users, data, and assets within these immersive digital environments. By leveraging principles such as zero trust, decentralization, and Privacy by Design, the chapter provides a comprehensive guide to developing a secure metaverse infrastructure. The threat landscape in virtual worlds is analyzed, including identity theft, social engineering, and augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) device vulnerabilities. Additionally, the importance of a Secure Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including penetration testing and simulation techniques, is discussed to ensure security is embedded in all stages of metaverse development. Future challenges, such as scaling security for mass adoption and the potential impact of quantum computing, are also examined, making this chapter essential for professionals looking to secure the metaverse against emerging threats.
