The Role of Task Complexity in Speech Production and Dialogue Models

Ana-María Nuevo · 2025

This chapter relates second language psycholinguistic perspectives of speech production and dialogue to cognitive task complexity (CTC). Primarily, this chapter discusses the scope of task complexity&s;s role in speech production by examining models of L1 speech production, which delineate three components of the conceptualizer, formulator, and articulator. The components are reviewed to substantiate models of bilingual speech production with a particular focus on how CTC influences components of the speech process. Similarly, an interactive-alignment account for modeling dialogues is discussed and related to second-language speech, and then related to possible and untested interactions it may have with CTC. This chapter calls for empirical research to consider these models when discussing their findings to further substantiate a speech production and dialogue model in CTC research based on oral data.
