Cognitive Radio Network Startup Transient Sensing

James S. Bonner · 2024

In Cognitive Radio Networks, the normal demand for transmitting data between nodes must also be balanced with the need to sense the primary licensed users on the spectrum. Care must be taken to minimize the interference on the primary user broadcast as well as to transmit data on the spectrum for fulfilling basic network needs. Fortunately, the cognitive radio network has a wide range of television whitespace channels on which to conduct communication and to analyze the spectrum. However, each of these channels exist with the possibility of primary user interference. Previous work has been done for cognitive radio network protocols that provide reliable data communication as in TCP CRAHN and TCP COBA, but in this thesis, we will analyze the startup transient of a cognitive radio network and provide an aggressive communication strategy on channels that receive insufficient data to conduct the aforementioned cognitive radio network protocols.
