Battery charge controllers (BCCs) play a pivotal role in integrating and controlling wind turbine systems, especially with advancements in digital technology. As the demand for renewable energy rises, wind energy is increasingly recognized as a key player in sustainable power generation. BCCs ensure the efficient management of electrical energy produced by wind turbines, optimizing the charging and discharging of batteries. Utilizing advanced techniques such as maximum power point tracking (MPPT), these controllers maximize energy capture under varying wind conditions while protecting batteries from overcharging and deep discharging. This paper discusses the various types of BCCs, their functionalities, and the challenges associated with their integration into both off-grid and grid-tied systems. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of digital technology on enhancing the performance of BCCs through smart monitoring and data analytics, allowing for real-time decision-making and improved energy management. Case studies illustrate the successful application of BCCs in diverse settings, demonstrating their significance in optimizing system efficiency and reliability. Ultimately, this study underscores the necessity of advanced BCCs in future wind energy projects to achieve sustainability and enhance the viability of renewable energy sources.
