Academic institutions explore generative artificial intelligence for varied educational and research goals, yet they often operate with limited budgets and specialized personnel shortages. Researchers have revealed that models capable of producing sophisticated outputs can be exploited for malicious objectives, magnifying cyber risks in settings where funding constraints impede robust defenses. This chapter investigated the impact of resource constraints on the secure deployment of generative AI, emphasizing emerging exploits that stem from data poisoning and model inversion. Findings indicated that coordinated defense strategies, clear governance frameworks, and targeted training mitigate threats without hindering research. These insights suggest that collaborative networks and practical safeguards are vital for sustaining academic innovation. The chapter contributes a framework to help institutions integrate advanced AI capabilities while preserving security.
