How do human and artificial minds compete?

Max M. Louwerse · 2025

AI in the news is often portrayed as the end of society as we know it. This chapter does not aim to discount these oftentimes valid concerns, but aims to place them in perspective. The chapter starts out with the questions why it is hardly possible to compare the accomplishments of human minds with those of artificial minds. It next addresses how similar concerns were handled in the past, how threats to society could also be opportunities for society, and how fear for AI may be explained by the lack of understanding AI. The chapter concludes that being concerned about creating better humans is far more important than being concerned about smarter machines.
