How do human and artificial minds perceive?

Max M. Louwerse · 2025

Perceiving information often is the predecessor of reasoning, thinking and learning. This chapter describes how the human eye perceives images, how the ear perceives sounds, and how machines have learned to do this. The chapter pays most attention to visual perception because it is most explained in the psychology literature and most commonly used in AI, but the chapter does not shy away from auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile perception. For every description of human perceptual processes, a description of these perceptual processes in AI is provided, addressing the specialized deep learning models that are able to do this. In addition, the chapter addresses the topic of Generative AI.
