SaaS solutions
Vladas Leonas, Sorin Toma · 2025
In this chapter, the evolution and benefits of Software as a Service (SaaS) are considered. SaaS emerged in the mid-1990s with applications like Salesforce and NetSuite, offering subscription-based software that reduces upfront costs and maintenance. SaaS provides a full application stack accessible online, eliminating the need for local installations. It is hosted on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure or Google, allowing access from any internet-connected device. SaaS is particularly suited for collaboration across geographically distributed organisations. The chapter highlights the proliferation of SaaS in various industries, driven by its cost-effectiveness, scalability and ease of deployment. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated SaaS adoption due to the need for remote work solutions. Today, SaaS tools are integral to organisational tech stacks, with a significant increase in usage over the past decade.
