Electronic Archives: From Digitized Images to Digital Twins

Alexander V. Solovyev · Istoriya · 2024

Over the past 25 years, during which the author of the report took part in the development of electronic archives, a whole era has passed. Starting from the digitization of paper documents and storing images on CDs in robotic libraries, ending with the development of the concept of using digital twin technologies. During this time, regulatory documents have changed significantly regarding the use of electronic signatures and the regulation of provisions on long-term storage. Electronic documents have significantly replaced paper ones, and the problem of their long-term safety has led to the development of algorithms and mathematical models for ensuring safety. Augmented and virtual reality methods can serve as a basis for monitoring information in archives. Digital twin technologies can serve as the basis for modeling storage conditions and ensuring the safety and restoration of archival documents. Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies can be the basis for quickly identifying problems and obtaining information about the state of an archival storage object. 3D and 4D printing technologies can help in the rapid restoration of archival storage objects. This report is devoted to the history of the development of electronic archives, the problem of ensuring long-term preservation of digital data and documents, as well as the problems and prospects of using modern technologies such as digital twins, augmented and virtual reality, and the industrial Internet of things.
