In this chapter, a holistic approach for the design of Smart Solid Waste Management Systems (SSWMS) that leverages IoT, AI and Data analytics to advance the mission of sustainable urban solid waste policies is presented. Because most densely populated cities suffer resource limitations, inefficient practices and a lack of technological infrastructure, traditional waste management methods can sometimes be ineffective. Finally, in this chapter, a modernized SSWMS that uses IoT enabled devices like sensors, GPS, and UHF readers to monitor real time waste levels, manage the fleet, and generate automated collection schedules is proposed. Furthermore, blockchain technology is used to secure data transmission process in vehicle ad-hoc networks (VANETs), causing transparency and lowering operational inefficiencies. Comprising predictive analytics and geofencing, this system supports route optimization and resource allocation across the entirety of the waste collection and recycling processes, for an efficient waste collection and recycling operation.
