Incorporating Ethical Reasoning in Calculus I

Juliana Bukoski, Catherine Erbes · PRIMUS · 2025

As a fundamental course for STEM careers, Calculus I is an ideal place to introduce students to the ethical practice of mathematics. However, it can feel impossible to add extra material to an already-packed syllabus. As part of the Framing Mathematics as a Foundation for Ethical STEM NSF grant, we developed a series of problems which integrate ethical reasoning and Calculus I topics. We then piloted the materials in our respective Calculus I classes in the Fall of 2023 and continued to use them in the Spring and Fall of 2024. Here we discuss how we developed the problems as well as our challenges and successes in implementing them.
