President's Message: Vote in the IEEE Election!

Mark Nelms · IEEE Industry Applications Magazine · 2002

In my last column, I reported that the cost of IAS membership, according to the IEEE, is US$26 per year. We pay only US$17 per year to be an IAS member. The IAS subsidizes US$9 of the cost of membership through income from our conferences and from the sales of our publications—IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and IEEE Industry Applications Magazine. What do we as IAS members receive for our US$17? As part of our membership, we receive six issues of IEEE Industry Applications Magazine each year and electronic access to IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. Costs for producing the magazine will be increasing substantially in the near future. The IAS Executive Board faced an interesting question in preparing the 2003 budget for the IAS: should IAS membership dues be increased to help offset the increasing production costs, or should the magazine be changed to reduce production costs? Based on much positive feedback about the magazine, the Executive Board decided to increase membership dues from US$17 to US$20 for 2003 instead of reducing the quality of the magazine.
