Preserving Privacy and Enhancing Security in Smart Electronic Health Records: An Integrated Approach of Blockchain and FHE

Yogesh Kumar Kushwaha, Niranjan Lal, Manisha Manjul · 2024

The integration of advanced electronic health records (EHRs) into healthcare systems has revolutionised patient treatment, yet it also poses considerable issues with privacy and security. This paper presents a new framework that integrates blockchain technology with Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) to resolve these challenges. The decentralised characteristic of blockchain guarantees the integrity and permanence of health records, while Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) facilitates calculations on encrypted data without jeopardising patient privacy. Our comprehensive strategy utilises blockchain's inherent security attributes and FHE's privacy preserving functionalities to establish a scalable and resilient system for managing EHRs. We illustrate the efficacy of our system in safeguarding sensitive health data from unauthorised access through comprehensive simulations, while ensuring the efficiency necessary for real-time healthcare applications. This research offers a thorough answer to the privacy and security issues in smart EHR systems, aiding in the advancement of more secure and dependable healthcare infrastructures.
