A Current Review of Polymeric Structures and Their Practical Significance in Cooling Water Treatment

Peter A. Thomas, Michael A. Mullins · 1985

Abstract Over the past five years significant advances have been made in the field of polymer chemistry related to the treatment of industrial cooling waters. This paper summarizes some of the more commonly utilized polymers and their efficacies toward potential foulants such as calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate. Scale control mechanisms for various simple and complex polymers are provided and consideration is given to molecular weights. Where possible, laboratory comparisons are made based on the relative costs of the polymers in question with feed rates adjusted accordingly.
