Aesthetics of living: Sensitivity, Technology and Affectivity

Jessica Romero Alatorre · Electronic workshops in computing · 2024

This research seeks to compile a series of reflections on the relationship between technology, ecology, aesthetics and ethics in the context of sound arts. One of the areas to question our current situation, both from an aesthetic and ethical point of view, is found in sound more specifically in the artistic practice of field recording. To delve into this perspective, we will look at the sound composition Hyper-Rainforest (2011) by Francisco López, putting it in dialogue with thinkers who from various fields are considering the relationships between humans and non-humans and who are questioning the dichotomy between nature and culture, including Donna Haraway, Vicent Despret, Anna Tsing, Bruno Latour, and Timothy Morton. Throughout this research, an analytical perspective of the work will be proposed in order to highlight connections between the relational condition of technology and affectivity, with sound and listening understood as conceptual, aesthetic, and ethical tools. Finally, conclusions will be derived from sound ecology with the aim of tracing a path of individual and collective reconstruction of our listening.
