Abstract This study explores the notion of flow states conceptualized by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi through an interdisciplinary lens of psychology, music, and visual art. In the book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, Csikszentmihalyi addresses that flow states are not merely a privilege but a human right that necessitates cultivation in our society. Following this position, my paper focuses on the significance of creative and somatic exercises as a mode of entrance into a flow state. Various perspectives are shared that build upon Csikszentmihalyi’s research of flow states, from composer Pauline Oliveros, psychologist Stephen Porges, and poet Tricia Hersey. Following their cross-disciplinary practices, this paper concludes with my personal experience of flow states through a visual art contribution.
