The proliferation of IoT devices and sensors leads to greater efficiency but also greatly increased attack surfaces. In this part of the series, we delve into some key security issues that plague IoT ecosystems with a solution- understanding device vulnerabilities and how they led to data exposure. IoT devices are frequently built without strong defences in place, with a lack of secure firmware combined with weak authentication making them top of the list for attackers. We will also turn to real-world threats, such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks launched by botnets and data breaches that disclose personal information or sensitive business information. Although the chapter certainly warns of the risks, it is by no means a doom-and-gloom line of reasoning. The paper outlines best practices to secure IoT systems, from security-by-design principles to leveraging AI and blockchain technologies.
